First Saturday Bird Walk at Ivy Creek Natural Area

1780 Earlysville Rd
If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about the birds right here in Central Virginia, or you’re simply looking for a peaceful way to start a summer morning, here’s a free outdoor activity worth checking out.
The Piedmont Virginia Bird Club is hosting its monthly First Saturday Bird Walk at Ivy Creek Natural Area on Saturday, July 4th. The walk begins at 7:30 in the morning, with participants gathering in the parking lot near the Education Building before heading out onto the trails.
Birders of all experience levels are welcome. Whether you can identify dozens of species by sight and sound or you’re just curious about the birds visiting your backyard feeder, this event is designed for everyone. No registration is required, and there’s no cost to participate.
The guided walk is led by experienced members of the Piedmont Virginia Bird Club, who help participants spot birds, identify calls, and learn more about the wildlife that makes Ivy Creek such a special natural area. The trails pass through a variety of habitats, creating opportunities to see a wide range of bird species throughout the year.
The walk typically lasts about an hour and a half and covers less than a mile on dirt and grass trails with some gentle hills. Participants are welcome to leave at any time if needed. A limited number of loaner binoculars will also be available on a first-come, first-served basis for those who don’t have their own.
Parking is free, and seasonal restrooms and drinking fountains are available on site.
The First Saturday Bird Walk takes place Saturday, July 4th from 7:30 until approximately 9 a.m. at Ivy Creek Natural Area in Charlottesville. It’s free, open to the public, and a great opportunity to experience nature while learning more about the birds that call Central Virginia home.
