CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – With warm temperatures, low humidity, and gusty winds, the National Weather Service has the area under an elevated fire risk throughout today. Relative humidity values around 30 percent are expected along with sustained north westerly winds of 15 to 20 mph and gusts 25 to 30 mph which will result in the rapid drying
of fine fuels. It is fall fire season through November 30 as the risk of wildfires is increased even without today’s elevated risk. Residents and visitors are urged to exercise caution if handling open flames or equipment that creates sparks. In fact, the state forestry department discourages open air burning until December. Also, dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and other flammable items in appropriate containers. Keep vehicles off of dry grass and obey local burn bans. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly.
