There will not be a special election in 2017 for a Virginia seat in the U.S. Senate. Tim Kaine will continue to serve as Virginia’s junior U.S. Senator. Kaine was the Democrats’ nominee for Vice-President, but he and ticket-mate Hillary Clinton have lost their bids for higher office.

This was Kaine’s first loss at the federal, state or local level. He has been a mayor of Richmond, and a lieutenant governor, governor and senator from Virginia.
