CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – With frigid air keeping the area in its grasp all week, the City of Charlottesvillle reminded residents of two warming shelters open, and community partners extending operations during the cold spell.

The Key Recreation Center at 800 E. Market St. is open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., according to a city release. Pets are welcome, but must be in a crate for the safety of them and others.

The Clemons Library at the University of Virginia, located at 164 McCormick Rd., is also open as a warming shelter from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

PACEM Monday is running a men’s shelter at University Baptist Church at 1223 W. Main St., and a women’s shelter at Belmont Baptist Church at 830 Monticello Ave. Those shelters open 24 hours a day.

The Salvation Army is also running a 24/7 warming shelter operation with warm rooms for women and men, with support by PACEM. Meals are being served there.

The Haven has also activated emergency operations and extended sheltering hours with additional support available.

The city advises residents may also contact Virginia 211 by dialing 2-1-1 or 1-800-230-6977 for information on community resources and assistance.

The City encourages residents to check on neighbors who may need help accessing shelter or warmth and to continue using caution during cold and icy conditions.

For emergencies, call 911. For non-emergency concerns, call 434-977-9041.
