CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW)- Fresh off an upset of then-No.1 Notre Dame, the resurgent Virginia men’s lacrosse team ended its 20-game regular-season losing streak against Duke, topping the Blue Devils 14-10 on Saturday in Durham, N.C.

Truitt Sunderland scored four times and Joey Terenzi added three goals and two assists as UVA notched its third straight victory.

Coach Lars Tiffany said the streak wasn’t a topic of conversation inside the program this week.

“We didn’t want to talk about it,” UVA coach Lars Tiffany said. “We’re 1-0 in conference. Can we get to 2-0? Going down to Durham, everyone knows we haven’t had a lot of success here. But the captains didn’t want to talk about the streak. ‘What’s the gameplan?'”

Ryan Colsey scored three goals and had an assist and Brendan Millon added a score and five assists. Goalie Jake Marek made 13 saves.

Trailing by a goal at halftime, the Hoos outscored Duke 5-1 in the third quarter to improve to 2-0 in ACC play.

Virginia will try to continue its streak against Syracuse on the road in New York at 4 p.m.

Women’s lacrosse

The women’s Lacrosse team suffered a lopsided loss on Saturday, falling 19-4 to the No. 2 North Carolina Tar Heels.  The Hoos, who lost for the fourth time in their last five outings, are now 1-7 at home this season. They face No. 10 Boston College on Senior Day next Saturday, before they finish the regular season on the road in Blacksburg against rival Virginia Tech.

Tennis

Women’s tennis had a successful trip to California last weekend.  The Cavaliers took out ranked opposition in the No. 23 California Golden Bears by a score of 4-1 in Berkeley, before blanking Stanford 4-0.  Senior day looms this weekend, as the Hoos welcome Wake Forest on Friday and N.C. State on Sunday to conclude the season.  The Wake Forest match will feature Senior Day festivities.

Men’s tennis treated their fans to a pair of wins this past weekend.  The No. 4 team in the nation took down No. 17 Notre Dame 4-1, before seeing of Louisville comfortably on their Senior Day, 4-0.  The final day of the regular season is this Thursday in Blacksburg, featuring the Commonwealth Clash on the Tennis Court.

Baseball

Chris Pollard’s Cavaliers took care of the Old Dominion Monarchs this past Tuesday with an offensive explosion at Disharoon Park.

The Hoos took that win by a score of 16-2 in seven innings.  That sent them into a big weekend series against the No. 7 Florida State Seminoles with some momentum.  Facing the Seminole ace, the Hoos stormed out to a 1-0 series lead with a hard fought 4-3 victory in game one.

Unfortunately, Florida State’s starting staff, that included former Wahoo Bryson Moore, proved too much for Virginia’s offense, losing 5-2 in game two, and 9-3 in game three.

A midweek contest against James Madison awaits tomorrow night at 6 p.m. from Disharoon Park, before the Hoos head to South Bend to battle the Notre Dame Fighting Irish for three games this weekend.

Softball

Virginia softball hit an uncharacteristic snag in Durham over the weekend, as the No.23 Duke Blue Devils pulled off an upset sweep of the No. 12 squad in the country, winning game one 5-2, a tight game two 4-3, and game three 8-4.  It will welcome the Ragin Cajun of Louisiana on Tuesday at Palmer Park before the Commonwealth Clash in Softball kicks off Friday against the Virginia Tech Hokies in Charlottesville.
