CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW)- As UVA’s football opener approaches Saturday at home against Coastal Carolina, other teams at the university are off to a fast start to their 2025 seasons. The men’s and women’s soccer teams are a combined 5-0 after weekend victories.
Women’s soccer opens 3-0
Steve Swanson’s women’s soccer team improved to 3-0 with a 2-0 road win over Liberty Sunday. The Cavaliers haven’t allowed a goal yet this season, outscoring their opponents 6-0 through the first three matches. Against the Flames, Lia Godfrey and Allie Ross each scored and Victoria Safradin made three saves in the win.
That came on the heels of UVA opening its home slate Thursday with a 3-0 defeat of Xavier at Klockner Stadium. Godfrey, Ross and Pearl Cecil scored in that contest.
The Hoos have two home matches against Charlotte and Georgetown this week. Charlotte takes to the pitch at Klockner on Thursday night, August 28th at 7:00 PM, looking to better their 3-1 record. Georgetown squares off with Virginia Sunday, August 31st at 1:00 PM. The Hoyas are coming off an authoritative 4-0 drubbing of JMU and an exciting 2-1 against Virginia Tech.
Men’s soccer posts back-to-back season-opening shutouts
The Virginia men’s team posted home victories over San Diego State (2-0 on Thursday) and Stetson (1-0 on Sunday) to open a season with a pair of shutouts for the first time since 2019.
On Thursday night against the Aztecs, Albin Gashi and Jesus DeVicente each scored for the Cavaliers, whose defense stifled San Diego State. Virginia goalie Casper Mols needed just one save to record the clean sheet.
On Sunday against Stetson, goals were hard to come by. In the 40th minute, off a short corner, the Hoos found the net on yet another well-rehearsed set-piece, with Brendan Lambe being the man who struck the ball into the goal this time.
This week, the Hoos take a trip to Fairfax on Thursday night to battle George Mason at 7 p.m., before coming home to Klockner for a Labor Day battle with American at 7 p.m. Mason is coming of 2-1 defeat to Marshall to begin their season. American has suffered two heartbreaking defeats, and will have to contend with #1 Vermont before coming to Charlottesville on Monday evening.
