RICHMOND, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Administrators with Virginia’s Insurance Marketplace has begun getting the word out of upcoming changes that may affect how much consumers pay for their health insurance next year. Some federal tax credits that lower monthly premiums are set to expire December 31, and Congress has not acted on any legislation to extend them. This means premium rates expected to increase for many customers.
Virginia Health Benefit Exchange Director Keven Patchett said they’re trying to get the word out now even though open enrollment doesn’t begin until November 1.
“These tax credits called Advance Premium Tax Credits, paid in advance to insurance carriers to lower the monthly premiums that customers pay, are based on a number of factors such as household size and household income,” Patchett told CvilleRightNow.
“So making sure that information is updated is important, and it’s also time to plan and prepare.”
He said they’ll have detailed information going out to customers in the next month or two about what rates will look like and how premiums will change.
“The more we can all do to prepare, the better we’ll be,” Patchett said.
