CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) has extended the swimming advisory for Lake Anna to include Terry’s Run due to a harmful algae bloom (HAB). This precaution follows a visual observation of bloom activity on Terry’s Run by the Department of Environmental Quality on July 23.
Affected areas of Lake Anna under advisory due to unsafe levels of cyanobacteria include:
– North Anna Branch: from the upper inundated waters to the Route 522 Bridge.
– Upper and Middle North Anna Branch: from the Route 522 Bridge to Lumsden Flats at Rose Valley Drive.
– Pamunkey Branch: from the upper inundated waters to Route 612 (Stubbs Bridge), now including Terry’s Run.
Cyanobacteria can cause skin rashes and gastrointestinal issues. Although one cyanotoxin was detected, it remains below health concern levels. The public is advised to avoid water activities that risk water ingestion. Boating may continue with precautions.
