UNDATED (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Traffic ground to a halt on Interstate 64 after an officer-involved shooting at eastbound mile marker 102 Wednesday. It all started when Waynesboro Police received an emergency call for a shooting at Parkway Village Apartments shortly after 5 p.m. Officers responding to the apartment complex saw the suspect’s vehicle fleeing the scene. As those officers continued their response, other officers attempted to stop the fleeing Lincoln MKZ, but the suspect refused to stop and sped away. A pursuit was initiated.

The pursuit continued over Afton Mountain into Albemarle County, where it came to a stop along the eastbound lanes of I-64 at mile marker 102, where the Lincoln ran off the Interstate and crashed into the guardrail at approximately 5:38 p.m. After approximately an hour of trying to get the adult male suspect to peacefully surrender, shots were fired. The man was transported to UVA Medical Center for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

The shooting and the investigation that followed kept an 8-mile stretch of I-64 closed for several hours. At first it was closed eastbound at mile marker 99 and eastbound at mile marker 107. Eventually, vehicles headed east were allowed to use a crossover head west. Later, the westbound lanes were fully reopened. As of 11:00 p.m., Wednesday, the eastbound lanes remained closed and were rerouted onto Route 250, and was reopened shortly before midnight.

Waynesboro Police are investigating the initial shooting where an adult male was hit and taken to UVA with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

No law enforcement personnel were injured during the course of the incident. A firearm was recovered at the I-64 scene.

As per department policy, the Waynesboro officers involved in the shooting on Afton are on administrative leave pending a State Police investigation.
