CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory from 11 a.m. through 8 p.m. Friday for record heat and a slight risk for severe storms in the afternoon through the evening.
Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses, the advisory said.
The weather service advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
The NWS also advises to take extra precautions when outside, and try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening, wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing and take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Heat exhaustion is the body’s reaction to excessive water and salt loss. When one experiences these symptoms, they are advised to get out of the heat when possible, use ice or cold water on the body, and drink liquids to rehydrate.
Heat stroke is an emergency situation where the body loses the ability to regulate temperature and the brain begins to shut down.
This is accompanied by hot, red, dry skin which had been sweating previously and a fast, strong pulse.
Those suffering from heat stroke should call 911 and seek immediate medical help.
The weather service also has the area under a 2-in-5 risk for severe storms Friday afternoon into the early evening.
Torrential downpours and damaging winds gusts in storms are the primary risk, according to Accuweather.
Severe storms narrowly missed Charlottesville and Albemarle Thursday as warnings were issued to the north around Culpeper and Spotsylvania counties, and to the south around Appomattox County.
