CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – ICE is detaining a 13-year old boy from Everett, MA in a Winchester juvenile detention center 500 miles away after what The Boston Globe reports was an interaction with the Massachusetts town’s police department.

The boy is the son of Brazilian family with a pending asylum case the family’s attorney tells The Globe have legal authorization to work in the United States.

His mom showed up at the Everett Police Department Thursday to pick her son up, but was told after waiting about an-hour-and-a-half that ICE had taken him.

His mom tells The Globe he was taken to a Burlington, VT ICE holding facility Thursday night before being taken to the Northwest Regional Juvenile Detention Facility in Winchester, VA Friday morning.

Massachusetts Live reports court documents reveal a Boston federal judge has ordered the juvenile released by Tuesday unless DHS can provide grounds for continued detention.
