CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLERIGHTNOW) – Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville’s offer to purchase the Carlton Mobile Home Park on behalf of its residents was accepted on Tuesday, August 6, 2024.

“We along with our partners at Piedmont Housing Alliance, Legal Aid Justice Center and the City of Charlottesville are thrilled and relieved to know that the Bolton family has accepted the offer we put before them on behalf of the residents who live in the community,” says President and CEO Dan Rosensweig. “Most importantly, we hope the residents can breathe a collective sigh of relief, knowing that we will now be working with them in partnership to prevent displacement and keep them right here in the community that they call home,”

Per state law, any sale of a trailer park is contingent upon the park owner considering any offers from a tenant group that represents 25% or more of existing tenants within 60 days of notification. Residents of Carlton received notice that the owners had received an offer on June 7th. Habitat, along with Piedmont Housing Alliance and Legal Aid Justice Center – supported by the City of Charlottesville – immediately began talking with residents and collected signatures on a petition, with more than 40% supporting Habitat making an offer on their behalf.

“This is, admittedly, one of the most challenging efforts we’ve ever been involved in given the timeline imposed upon the process, stated Rosenweig. “But we are grateful that the Bolton family has accepted our offer, and we are humbled to know that the residents of the Carlton community were willing to take this leap of faith with us. Many residents told us that the Boltons cared about the community and they really proved that here. We look forward to working closely with the residents in the months and years to come.”
