“We started doing the Special Needs Day so that local kids and adults could have an opportunity to participate at their own speed,” said Wade Parrish, President of the Fluvanna County Fair Board. “They can enjoy and don’t have to feel overwhelmed by other fairgoers competing for time and space on the carnival rides and experiencing the exhibits.”

Participants can explore the fair from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., before it opens to the general public. Adjustments, such as reduced noise levels, personalized ride experiences, and more individual interactions with animals, help ensure a comfortable experience for all attendees. “The fair organizers and the individuals running the activities have been so gracious with accommodations,” added Jennifer Valentine, Director of Special Education for Fluvanna County Public Schools.

She noted that these adaptations give participants the ability to enjoy the fair without a crowded environment, with options such as turning the music and lights to lower levels, stopping a ride after one or two cycles for hesitant riders, or even continuing the ride for longer for those who are truly enjoying themselves.

“The carnival has always been kind enough to operate at no cost during this special event,” Parrish said. “The 4H petting zoo and the Axe Women show are open for the event.”

This year’s Special Needs Day event will be held on Friday, August 16, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Fluvanna County residents of any age with special needs are welcome to enjoy the fair and carnival during this time.
