CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – A Tuesday afternoon crash on Route 33 involved a Greene County School Bus, according to a social media post from the Greene County Sheriff’s Office.

“This evening on Route 33 westbound near McDaniel Lane, there was a situation that could have been much worse, and we are thankful no injuries occurred,” the post said.

The bus, which was not carrying passengers at the time, was rear-ended by an SUV. The driver of the SUV, its sole occupant, was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to Capt. Kevin Freid with the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office posted images of the damaged school bus with chunks missing from its left rear and side, and what appeared to be a heavily damaged silver-colored automobile.

The post advised, “Please remain alert while driving, especially on main highways where school buses make frequent stops.”

At 5:19 p.m., the Virginia Department of Transportation announced that a crash on U.S. 33 near Reva and Business Park Dr. was causing traffic delays. A 5:20 p.m. VDOT advised that eastbound lanes on 33 were closed.
