CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Starting Wednesday, the 2nd and 4th street crossings on the Downtown Mall will be closed through at least June 12 for infrastructure improvements.

According to a city release, the project includes the removal and replacement of existing brick and granite pavers, along with concrete repairs and storm drain upgrades at both intersections.

To improve efficiency, minimize the overall duration of disruption, and ensure the work is completed in time for the Downtown Mall’s 50th anniversary, both crossings will be closed at the same time.

If the work is completed early, then the crossings will reopen early.

Charlottesville Area Transit (CAT) riders should be aware of temporary detours during construction, and The Trolley will be rerouted to avoid the Mall Crossing area while maintaining service to key stops, including Midway Manor.

The release revealed ” When returning to the Downtown Transit Station via South Street, the detour route will be as follows:

  • Left onto 2nd St SW
  • Left onto W Water St
  • Right onto Ridge McIntire Rd
  • Right onto Preston Ave (which becomes W Market St)
  • Then resume the current route

The only stop impacted by this detour is the Downtown Mall stop. Riders should plan for potential delays of up to approximately five (5) minutes.”

Temporary pedestrian interruptions could also occur for short time periods.
