CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Four people were shot, including a gunman, following an altercation at a private Halloween party early Saturday morning, according to Charlottesville Police.

Juan Gavin Castillo, 20, of Greene County, has been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting of a 44-year-old male, a 44-year-old female and 20-year-old male, all Charlottesville residents, after an incident that occurred shortly before 12:43 a.m. at 1147 River Road in the city.

All three victims and Castillo were transported to UVA Medical Center where they are in stable condition, according to CPD.

Castillo suffered a gunshot wound in the incident. He is charged with two counts of malicious wounding, two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and two counts of maliciously discharging a firearm within a building or dwelling.

β€œThe quick response and lifesaving measures taken by our officers undoubtedly saved lives tonight,” CPD chief Michael Kochis said in a release. “Their calm under pressure, use of tourniquets, and immediate medical intervention reflect the very best of who they are and the values of this department. I am incredibly proud of their actions and their commitment to protecting this community.”

According to the release, a CPD officer in the area heard the gunfire and responded to the scene “within moments.” In addition, CPD received multiple 911 calls reporting an active shooter at the location.

Police believe the incident began indoors at the party, where two of the victims were struck by gunfire, then continued outside where a third victim was shot.

“Upon arrival, officers located four individuals suffering from gunshot wounds,” the CPD release said. “Responding officers immediately began administering lifesaving medical care, including the use of department-issued tourniquets and trauma kits, while simultaneously securing a large and active crime scene.”

The investigation is ongoing and police response Saturday morning required the management of a large crime scene, one that spanned about a quarter-mile stretch of the area.

This investigation remains active. Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to contact Detective Houchens at 434-970-3985 or Crime Stoppers at 434-977-4000.
