CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Tonight throughout central Virginia, if we can shake some of these clouds, we could see a rare view of the aurora borealis… or the Northern Lights… in the northern horizon of our skies. Local storm chaser and space weather expert Peter Forister says we’re not far enough north to get the full show of colors, but we could get a bit of a show. He says we really don’t know exactly what we’ll see until about an hour before the storm, but usually we see a red glow — and maybe some white pillars on occasion.

Peter photographed a storm from Shenandoah National Park many saw in March of last year. He says that and another storm in 2023 were G3 storms while this one today and tonight is a G4, which is the first one this strong since 2005. That’s why some in the United States may see the aurora into the Deep South.
