CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Residents of about 30 homes lost access, in and out, of their neighborhood Saturday when high water caused a 40-50 foot section of Fray Road to collapse, but police and fire rescue crews were able to open an alternate route by Sunday evening, the county said.

At about 6 p.m., Albemarle County Fire Rescue and the Albemarle County Police Department were dispatched to Fray Road, near the Greene County line, for reports of the flooded and imperiled roadway, according to ACPD spokesperson Logan Bogert.

Fray Road is a private road and the only access point for about 30 homes.

“Over the weekend, career and volunteer units with Albemarle County Fire Rescue, along with our Office of Emergency Management worked with the neighborhood to assess the situation and identify an alternate access point for these residents,” according to a statement from the county. “By the end of the day on Sunday … crews cleared an old roadbed as a temporary means of access.”

When Fray Road will be repaired determined by the homeowners association of the affected residents, since Fray Road is not a Virginia Department of Transportation roadway. The HOA will handle funding and coordinating the repairs.

“Albemarle County is continuing to support the HOA and affected residents as they work toward a more permanent resolution,” the county’s statement said.
