Rebuilt Vietnam Memorial Dedicated

The rebuilt Dogwood Vietnam Memorial was dedicated Friday. It was the first monument of its kind in the U.S. It honors the 24 men from Charlottesville and Albemarle who were killed in the Vietnam War.

One of the speakers was retired Marine colonel and Vietnam veteran James O’Kelley, who paid tribute to two of those who died by describing their sacrifice. It was the 50th dedication ceremony for the memorial that was first set up on April 20th, 1966.

The monument has a new look following construction of the John W. Warner Parkway, but it’s in virtually the same location as the original one.
