A Madison County man was arrested Tuesday morning after authorities say he tried to abduct a woman in the parking lot of a Culpeper County school. 28-year-old David Hernandez Shumaker (pictured) of Rochelle is accused of hiding in the woman’s car and trying to force her to drive away. Culpeper Sheriff Scott Jenkins says Shumaker was hiding in the back seat of the woman’s car at A.G. Richardson Elementary School. The woman returned to her car shortly after school began. Jenkins says the suspect was wearing a ski mask and had a knife, and he told her to drive away from the school. The woman got out of the car when the suspect became distracted, but he chased her. She ran into the school where the staff got the woman into a room and detained the suspect until deputies arrived. Sheriff Jenkins says the woman and Shumaker know each other, and he’s accused of stalking her before Tuesday’s incident. Jenkins says detectives found knives, zip ties and a cloth gag in the victim’s car. Shumaker is charged with abduction, carjacking, having a weapon on school property and several other offenses. He’s being held without bond in the Culpeper County jail.
