Judge Orders Coker To Be Taken Off Sex Offender Registry

A circuit judge has ordered that Orange County resident Edgar Coker’s name must be removed from the state’s Sex Offender Registry. Judge Jane Roush has ruled court-appointed attorney Denise Rafferty did not provide effective counsel for Coker in 2007. Attorneys with the Innocence Project at the UVA Law School, and the JustChildren organization have been working to clear Coker’s name. Coker was 15 in June 2007 when a 14-year-old neighbor accused him of breaking into her Stafford County home and raping her. After Coker was convicted, the girl changed her story and said the had consented to having sex.
