CHARLOTTESVILLE (WINA) – City Council stands poised to require drivers to stop at crosswalks in accordance with state law.  While this is an action item people can speak about tonight, Council has no choice. They have to bring the city’s ordinance involving crosswalks up to new state law the 2023 General Assembly enacted in July.

State law, and the new city code language, requires vehicles to now stop completely when any pedestrian is within the driver’s lane or within an adjacent lane and approaching the driver’s lane until the pedestrian has completely crossed the driver’s lane. The old state law and ordinance just requires the driver to yield. Think of it being a “stop”sign at a crosswalk when there’s a pedestrian instead of “yield”.
