A senior at Charlottesville High School has won the top prize during this year’s Emily Couric Leadership Forum. Carman Drake is getting a $30,000 scholarship. Drake will attend Yale University this fall and plans to study international relations. Eight other young women who attend area high schools have received $5000 scholarships. Journalist Tina Brown, who has worked for the Daily Beast and Newsweek, was also honored Monday afternoon. TV newswoman Katie Couric (pictured), who was the youngest sister of the late Emily Couric, greeted the winners during the scholarship luncheon. Emily Couric represented much of this area in the State Senate before she died of cancer in October 2001.
