CHARLOTTESVILLE (WINA) – The University of Virginia has released a new video urging fans in athletic venues who sing the “Good Old Song” to keep it “good”. The video features students, prominent faculty — such as Dean of Students Allen Groves and Center for Politics Professor Larry Sabato, athletes Bryce Hall and Bryce Perkins among others, alumni such as Tina Fey, and others. Athletic Director Carla Williams says in the video the University of Virginia is a place “that competes and wins with class”.
Head football coach Bronco Mendenhall says, “We want the same standard that’s to be the best we can be, not only as an institution, but as people.”
The Good Ole Song is sung after a team or individual in many athletic contest scores — and also after contests whether the Hoos win or lose. The issue is things that are shouted immediately after the lyrics, “We come from ole Virginia, where all is bright and gay”. Many insert shouts immediately after saying “not gay” or “f___ Tech”. The video urges fans to sing the song as written — upholding the University standard.
