Three people were killed by a tornado in Waverly Wednesday afternoon, and one person was killed with several injured by another tornado in Appomattox County. Governor McAuliffe has declared a state of emergency in response to the severe weather that barreled through central and eastern Virginia.

Waverly is where two men, ages 50 and 26, and a 2-year-old boy, were killed when a tornado destroyed their mobile home. The bodies of the adults were found about 300 yards from the trailer. Storm debris in the funnel’s five-mile path left Routes 460 and 40 impassable both in and leading into Waverly. Numerous structures were damaged. State Police imposed a 7:30 p.m. curfew in the tiny farming town, located about 25 miles southeast of Petersburg in the heart of peanut country. People were told to stay in their homes so search and rescue teams could go door to door to see if anyone was missing. All businesses in the town of 2000 were closed Wednesday evening.

A second tornado ripped a path of destruction 8 to ten miles long in Appomattox County (pictured). An elderly man initially reported missing in the community of Evergreen was found dead later. At least seven people were injured in Appomattox County, two seriously. Several buildings were damaged along Routes 460 (pictured) and 727 and into the communities of Evergreen and Promise Land. All Appomattox County schools were closed Thursday.

At least 30 structures were damaged with 15 destroyed in Essex County and the Town of Tappahannock in eastern Virginia. A total of 25 injuries were reported there, ranging from minor to serious.
