Shouldn’t every vote count in the election of our President? Come learn how we can help make that happen through the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact!
The League of Women Voters of the Charlottesville Area, in collaboration with Indivisible Charlottesville and Charlottesville NOW, is co-hosting a free Community Dialogue as part of the Tom Tom Festival’s Community Partner Program. This event will take place on April 19 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM in the Swanson Room of the Jefferson Madison Regional Library, located at 201 East Market Street, Charlottesville.
Every four years, the U.S. presidential election process serves as a reminder that voters do not directly determine the winner; rather, the Electoral College plays this crucial role. This unique system, used only in the United States, allows a candidate to win the presidency even if they lose the popular vote.
This informative event explores the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact and its potential to transform the Electoral College, ensuring that every vote cast in a presidential election carries equal weight. By shifting the focus to a nationwide popular vote system, this initiative aims to make the electoral process more democratic and representative of the will of the people. To become the law across the country, however, enough states need to join the compact. Work is underway in Virginia to do so.
Participants will gain insight into how the compact works, its legal and constitutional implications, and the status of its adoption across various states. Through expert analysis and discussion, attendees will better understand the movement’s impact on future elections and the broader democratic landscape. The guest speaker is Jane Newell, who coordinates the compact adoption effort for the League of Women Voters of Virginia.
Founded in 1920, the League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan organization dedicated to enhancing public understanding of major public policy issues and influencing policy through education and advocacy. The League looks forward to continuing its mission through events like this one.
