On Saturday morning, July 2, 2022, the Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville, in conjunction with the Charlottesville Track Club, and with major support from Better Living Inc., will present the 39th Annual Independence Day 5K Race at Forest Lakes subdivision. Registration and the start/finish line will be between Hollymead Elementary School and Lakeside (formerly Sutherland) Middle School, but the course will go through Forest Lakes North and South as traditionally. Proceeds this year will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Blue Ridge, whose mission is “to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported 1-to-1 relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.” Athena Gould, executive director of Blue Ridge Bigs, stated: “By partnering with such excellent community groups as the Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville, we are able to remain committed to doing what we do best—give kids access to great mentors and positive experiences.”
Some of the area’s fastest 5K times are recorded at this race, which starts at 7:30 a.m. The event is expected to attract more than 250 runners and walkers of all ages. Packet pickup this year at Lakeside Middle School (formerly Sutherland), Friday, July 1, 4 – 6 p.m. and on race day from 6:30 – 7:15 a.m.
The Kiwanis Club has been serving the children of Charlottesville and the world for 100 years. The club sponsors Key Clubs at 4 area high schools, a Circle K International Club (CKI) at the University of Virginia, and an Aktion Club at VA Institute of Autism (VIA) and Innisfree Village. “Over the past three decades, the Kiwanis Independence Day Race has raised more than $140,000, assisting such fine agencies as Big Brothers Big Sisters in their work with children and youth,” said Jim Hart, current Kiwanis president. “We salute Better Living Inc. for stepping up in a most generous way as a signature sponsor of this event for the sixteenth straight year,” said Kiwanian Sean Horn, this year’s event coordinator.
