The Charlottesville Dogwood Vietnam Memorial has stood as a place of remembrance and reflection since 1966, honoring those who served and sacrificed during the Vietnam War and conflict in Southeast Asia. Now, a group of local veterans and community members are hoping to bring attention to another issue connected to the memorial: accessibility.

On Tuesday, May 26th at 4 p.m., veterans, advocates, and residents, including some with disabilities, will take part in a public walk beginning at the Charlottesville Albemarle Rescue Squad and traveling to the Dogwood Vietnam Memorial and McIntire Park. Organizers say the event is designed to demonstrate the challenges many people face trying to safely reach the memorial and the park, including crossing six lanes of traffic and navigating steep terrain.

The memorial itself holds an important place in American history. Dedicated on April 20th, 1966, it was the first public civic memorial in the United States created to honor all members of the U.S. Military who served in Vietnam and Southeast Asia, especially those from the Charlottesville and Albemarle area who lost their lives in service.

Organizers say changes made during construction of the John Warner Parkway dramatically altered access to the site, making it especially difficult for older veterans and community members to visit both the memorial and McIntire Park safely.

The event will happen rain or shine, and the community is invited to join the walk and support efforts to improve access and awareness.
