Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army’s triumph over the French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. This victory demonstrated the strength and courage of the Mexican soldiers against a powerful and better-equipped European army. While it is not Mexico’s Independence Day (which is celebrated on September 16), Cinco de Mayo has become a symbol of Mexican pride and resilience. Celebrated mostly in the United States, it is a day to honor Mexican culture and heritage.
