If you’ve spent any time in Charlottesville, chances are you’ve made memories on the Downtown Mall. Maybe it was dinner with friends, a concert at Ting Pavilion, shopping, a festival, or just a stroll along those iconic brick walkways.
Well this summer, Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall is celebrating a major milestone. On Friday, July 3rd, the Downtown Mall turns 50 years old, and the community is invited to an all-day birthday celebration marking five decades as the heart of the city.
The festivities begin at 10 o’clock in the morning with a historical walking tour led by the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society. Throughout the day, visitors can also explore special exhibits looking back at Charlottesville in the 1970s.
At 4 PM, the Birthday Bash kicks off at Central Place with free ice cream, family-friendly activities, and live entertainment. Then at 5:30, Fridays After Five gets a special anniversary edition as local favorite Baaba Seth takes the stage at the Ting Pavilion.
As the sun sets, the celebration becomes even more magical. At 8:30 PM, community members carrying handmade lanterns will march through the Downtown Mall in a glowing lantern parade along the historic bricks.
Then at 9 PM, the evening concludes with ECHOES: 50 Years of the Charlottesville Downtown Mall, a one-night-only light projection created by local artist Jeff Dobrow. Historic photographs and stories will come alive across the facade of the CODE Building, transforming Charlottesville’s history into a stunning public art experience.
It’s a day of music, history, art, and community celebrating one of Charlottesville’s most treasured landmarks. CLICK HERE for the complete schedule, lantern parade information, and workshop registration details.
