It’s going to be a Ravens/ 49’ers Superbowl this year. Who are you rooting for? I guess since I spent a significant amount of time living in Maryland before settling here I’ll be rooting for the Ravens. But my heart really isn’t in it.
I grew up in Miami rooting for the Dolphins. I’ve moved around a lot over the years, but no matter where I was living, and even though they more or less suck these days, my loyalty has always been with the Dolphins, as I’m sure your loyalty is with your hometown team.
I’m surprised, however, that I’ve encountered so many people over the years who have no ties whatsoever to South Florida, but are huge Dolphins fans. My best friend Mike who grew up in St. Louis is a diehard Dolphins fan, as are people I know here in Virginia, in Northern New England and just about every other place I’ve lived. Why is that?
I guess it’s because the Dolphins are the only NFL team that has ever had a perfect season – 1972. In addition to the “Dolphins Fight Song” there was also a song out in the 70’s about the team’s famous “No Name” defense. And, even though he never won a Superbowl, Dan Marino is the greatest quarterback that ever played the game.
I’m sure the Dolphins will never return to the glory days of the past, but I’ll still go into each new season with optimism. Go Dolphins!
