It’s a classic American film that families watch together every holiday season. “It’s A Wonderful Life” tells the story of George Bailey who, feeling like he’s at the end of his rope, contemplates suicide on Christmas Eve. Then, a guardian angel shows him what life in his town would have been like had he never been born…and everyone’s lives essentially sucked without George Bailey!
When “It’s A Wonderful Life” came out in 1946, the FBI labeled it as “subversive” and “communist propaganda. Informants to the agency claimed that Mr. Potter, the wealthy banker portrayed as the story’s villain, was a sign of communist influence.
You have to remember that post World War II, our country was terrified that the communists were going to take over, which led to extreme paranoia – i.e. McCarthyism. But “It’s A Wonderful Life?” Really??
