VMI is getting ready for a re-enactment next week of the Battle of New Market. Every cadet at the Lexington school headed north in May 1864 for a showdown with Union forces a few miles north of Harrisonburg. Local historian Rick Britton says Confederate generals expected to use the VMI students as baggage handlers, but they ended up becoming soldiers. Britton notes ten VMI cadets died on May 15th, 1864 or a few days later. Six of them are buried on the VMI campus (pictured). Britton was a recent guest on Charlottesville…Right Now with Les Sinclair.
