Virginia Rolls Maryland 11-2, Books Ticket To Omaha

Virginia Baseball jumped on Maryland early and rode a stellar start from Josh Sborz to a berth in the College World Series winning by the final of 11-2.
It didn’t take long for Virginia to strike on the evening as the Cavaliers rallied with two outs in the bottom of the 1st. Derek Fisher opened up the scoring, batting in Danny Pinero on an RBI single to center field. Then it was Kenny Towns’ turn, as the junior trippled to bring home Joe McCarthy and Derek Fisher to make the score 3-0.
The wave of runs continued for Virginia in the 3rd. Once again Towns delivered with a 2 RBI hit to put the ‘Hoos out in front 5-0.
Meanwhile in the away frames, Sborz continued to command the strike zone. The sophomore tied a career high striking out nine Terrapins through seven innings of shutout baseball.
Maryland got on the scoreboard in the 8th when Blake Schmit knocked in a 2 RBI double to narrow the deficit. But in the bottom portion of the inning Virginia would explode again offensively, batting around while tacking on five more runs to create an 11-2 cushion.
In relief Nick Howard finished off Maryland completing the final four outs to send his squad to the College World Series.
Leading the way at the plate for the Cavaliers was third baseman Kenny Towns who continued his outstanding batting with three hits and four RBIs, which tied a school record in NCAAT action.
Virginia advances to the College World Series for the third time in program history where they will be the highest remaining seed in the tournament.
