A UVA study the demand greatly outweighs the supply when it comes to services for mental health. Economics professor Steven Stern looked at those who cannot afford private care and have to rely on regional community service boards. Stern says many Central Virginians are not receiving the public mental health services they need. He says the main barrier to getting treatment is cost and the lack of public service supply. Stern says the supply of private mental health providers in the region is actually quite large. But there’s a severe shortage for those without the financial resources to pay for such care.
