Suspect In Madison County Standoff Identified

A suspect is in custody after a standoff in Madison County early Wednesday. It happened at the Skyline Restoration auto body shop on Route 29 in Madison at around 7:30 a.m. where shots were fired. The suspect is 42-year-old David Allen Cole of Culpeper, an employee at the body shop. Authorities say Cole fired five shots from a handgun. He went into the shop and the employees fled. They say Cole held a gun to his neck until a State Police negotiator convinced Cole to surrender after a standoff of over two hours. Cole was taken into custody at around 10 a.m. and was charged with reckless handling of a firearm. There were no injuries. The situation led to the closing of Route 29 in both directions. A detour was set up and traffic was backed up for several miles in all directions on 29 and side roads. All lanes of Route 29 were reopened at around 10:30 a.m. There was a temporary lockdown at Madison County High School, but classes resumed a short time after the standoff ended.
