State Senate Approves Sunday Hunting

Despite the opposition of two area lawmakers, the State Senate has approved a measure that allows Sunday hunting. Senators Creigh Deeds (D- Bath County) and Emmett Hanger (R- Augusta County) voted Tuesday to keep Virginia’s long-running ban on hunting wild birds and animals. Hanger (pictured) represents Greene County and parts of the Shenandoah Valley. Tom GarrettĀ (R- Louisa County) was on the prevailing side of the 28-11 vote. The House of Delegates has already approved the bill by a wide margin, and Governor McAuliffe has said he will sign it. Supporters of the change say Virginia’s prohibition on Sunday hunting is outdated. Those who favored the existing law say Sunday has been a day of greater safety for nature lovers.
