Some Area Residents Protest Coverage Of December Incident

Some local residents held a protest Friday afternoon outside the East Main Street offices of C’ville Weekly. Malcolm Stevenson (pictured with a bullhorn) led one of the chants. You can hear Stevenson’s remarks by clicking the button at the bottom of this article. Stevenson and Richard Spears have been charged with misdemeanor assault. The two men turned themselves in a couple of weeks after a December 20th incident on the Downtown Mall. Jeff Winder, who assisted the organizers of the rally, is critical of C’ville Weekly’s first article about an encounter between Stevenson and Spears and two other people. That initial article quoted alleged victim Jeanne Doucette, who had questions as to whether this might have been a knockout incident. Winder told Les Sinclair of WINA’s Charlottesville…Right Now that many police officials and news organizations take issue with the term, and consider it to be an urban legend.
