School Board Sends Budget To City Hall

With one dissenting vote, the City School Board has approved a funding request for the next academic year. Finance Director Ed Gillaspie says the major features of the $73 million plan include a step increase plus 1.5% pay raise for teachers and a continuation of a safe schools program that had been funded by a grant. Jennifer McKeever cast the only no vote during a special Thursday meeting. McKeever is not happy about a proposal to eliminate some coordinator positions and add ten teaching coaches. The board has also heard about that proposal from some current teachers. Superintendent Rosa Atkins (pictured) will explain the proposal to City Councilors on Monday night.
