The recount in the contest for Attorney General kicked off Monday in Virginia’s largest county and the cities of Alexandria and Chesapeake. The rest of the Commonwealth begins the recount process Tuesday. By late Monday afternoon, Fairfax County came up with 183 more votes for Democrat Mark Herring and 92 for Republican Mark Obenshain. The additional votes came from less than one-third of the 242 precincts in Fairfax. During the November 5th election, he Democrats’ statewide ticket fared well in that county. The Virginia Public Access Project has estimated that 712,000 optical scan ballots will be reviewed statewide. Those types of ballots are getting extra scrutiny this week from poll watchers.
