Quicker Decisions When Ordering Hurricane Evacuations


The state will make a quicker decision in the future about ordering any hurricane evacuation. As part of reviewing state hurricane preparedness, the decision-making process will be moved up by as much as 12 hours. Evacuation zones will be set up in the Hampton Roads area over the next two years. They’re also trying to find more adequate hurricane shelters in that region. Currently, only eight shelters in Hampton Roads can withstand a Category 2 hurricane. Gas stations will have incentives to add generators in case they lose power.
