Pearisburg Policeman Shoots Man During Traffic Stop

A police officer in Pearisburg shot and killed a man during a traffic stop Sunday. State Police say the man who died was 47-year-old Thomas N. Saunders of Ripplemead. Saunders was driving a car that was stopped by the officer Sunday afternoon in the Giles County town of Pearisburg. State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says Saunders got out of the car and pointed a gun at the officer, who then shot Saunders. He died at a nearby hospital. The officer has not been identified.
