A onetime Virginia congressman who garnered national attention four decades ago has passed away. Caldwell Butler (R- Roanoke) was a freshman member of the House Judiciary Committee who voted to impeach President Richard Nixon in late July 1974. The Sixth District congressman was the only southern Republican on the committee who supported any impeachment charges against Nixon. Butler won five terms in a House district that included Roanoke, Lynchburg and much of the lower Shenandoah Valley. He was 89, and a 1950 graduate of the University of Virginia Law School.
