Onetime Navy Seal Penalized For Releasing Classified Items

A onetime sailor who was part of an elite Navy Seal unit was sentenced Friday in our area’s federal courthouse for unauthorized removal of classified materials. U.S. Attorney Tim Heaphy says 50-year-old Bruce Schliemann of Virginia Beach used to work for a Defense Department contractor in California and downloaded classified material that was eventually turned over to his employer in Orange County. A judge at the Vinegar Hill federal courthouse gave Schliemann three years of supervised release, and must also pay a $10,000 fine.
