Insects that damage a certain type of tree. More have been found in Shenandoah National Park. Additional emerald ash borer beetles were caught in a trap near Front Royal. Park officials say it’s a high number of bugs, and its’s bad news since ash trees are a significant part of the Shenandoah National Park ecosystem. Eric Wiseman, associate professor of urban forestry at Virginia Tech, says the larvae of the emerald ash borer feed off the vascular system of the ash tree, essentially choking the tree to death. Wiseman says the only good news is that there are not as many ash trees in Virginia as there are in the Midwest where there’s been major damage. The insect originally came from Asia, and one of the main ways it’s spread in the U.S. is through the transportation of firewood and other wood products. Shenandoah National Park says complete eradication of the insect is not feasible, but officials are taking actions to maintain public safety and to protect ash trees where possible.
