The trial of former Governor Bob McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, included a brush with fame Tuesday. Jurors heard from VCU cardiologist George Vetrovec, who said Jonnie Williams took him to an event at the executive mansion celebrating the release of “Lincoln,” the movie directed by Steven Spielberg. Williams took him to Maureen McDonnell, who then introduced┬áhim to the famous director. Vetrovec testified that it looked to him like Williams was using the event to enhance his interest in Anatabloc, which the doctor told jurors didn’t work. The panel also heard from State Police Special Agent Charles Hagen, who asked the former first lady about a $50,000 check from Williams. Hagen says she called it a loan, Williams testified that it was a gift. Jurors also heard from Jonnie Williams brother, Donnie, who testified to doing extensive work on the McDonnells’ personal home, projects such as replacing floors, staining the deck, trimming the bushes and getting a new hot tub cover. Maureen McDonnell asked in a text message if he needed a credit card, to which he replied that his brother was paying for it. She later asked for receipts and offered a check, but not until after the corruption investigation began.
