An increase in the local jobless rate. Ann Lang of the Virginia Employment Commission says the January figure for the Charlottesville region was 4.3%, up from 4% in December. Lang says the jump following the holiday period is not unusual as retailers cut back. Lang says the employment picture tends to improve as we head into the spring. The Charlottesville area continues to have the second lowest rate in Virginia, and this time we’re tied for 18th lowest in the nation. The statewide jobless rate went up .6% from December to 5.4% in January.
