Food Bank Says Hunger Is Real For Many

A new study shows the Charlottesville area’s food insecurity rate is 17.9%. The Harrisonburg and Lynchburg areas were the only communities with higher rates in the region that’s served by the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. Michael McKee of the food bank says there has been no significant job growth other than part-time work, and it helps to make hunger the new norm for many people. McKee says one example is a woman who was doing well until her husband lost his construction job at a time when they were approaching retirement age. McKee says hunger will continue to be a major problem until good paying jobs are available.
