Laundry Room Fire Forces Evacuation Of Culpeper Jail

A weekend fire in a laundry room prompted a four-hour evacuation of the Culpeper County Jail. Sheriff Scott Jenkins says his deputies evacuated 81 inmates and one civilian employee to the Culpeper County courthouse. Jenkins says a dryer fire in a second-floor laundry room was discovered at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, and all of the inmates were back at the jail four hours later. One deputy was treated for smoke inhalation at Culpeper Regional Hospital. The sheriff’s office says the fire damage was roughly $15,000.
