Judge Rules In Highly-Publicized Assault Case

A Charlottesville judge has determined three people who were accused of a pre-Christmas misdemeanor assault were guilty.  The judge ruled Richard Spears (pictured left) and Malcolm Stevenson (pictured right) assaulted Jeanne Doucette and her friend Marc Adams on the Downtown Mall early on the morning of December 20th. Spears was sentenced to a 40-day active jail term and Stevenson got 10 days. The general district court judge also fined Doucette $100 for her role in the incident, and dropped the charge against Adams. The incident generated extensive debate during the final days of 2013 thanks to a delay assigning the assault case to a city police detective.
